Calmbirth® Birth Preparation Classes | Central Coast

Preparation For All Possibilities

Birth preparation isn’t about guaranteeing a particular outcome.

It’s about understanding your options, developing practical skills and gaining clarity around your values, priorities and preferences for birth.

The choices you make throughout pregnancy, the relationships you build with your care providers and the ways you prepare can all influence your experience. Preparation is not simply about learning information — it is about actively engaging with the journey and shaping the path wherever possible.

Calmbirth® combines education, practical skills, self-reflection and partner preparation to help you approach birth feeling informed, confident and prepared for the many possibilities ahead.

The goal isn’t to prepare for a single outcome, but to feel capable of navigating the journey wherever it may lead.

Preparation That Goes Beyond Information

Birth preparation is often thought of as gathering information for labour.

Yet preparation runs much deeper than understanding what may happen on the day.

It involves exploring your values, understanding your options, developing practical skills and considering the choices that can influence your experience throughout pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.

The way you prepare can shape how informed, confident and supported you feel as your journey unfolds.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to attend?

We recommend attending a Calmbirth® course between 22 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. This provides plenty of time to practise the skills, integrate the knowledge and build confidence before birth.

Attending earlier in pregnancy also allows you to apply what you learn during antenatal appointments and discussions with your care providers. Many parents find that understanding their options, values and preferences earlier helps them navigate decisions throughout pregnancy with greater confidence and clarity.

If you are feeling particularly anxious or fearful about birth, we encourage you to attend as early as possible. This provides more time to process the information, practise the techniques and develop the skills that can support your nervous system, reduce fear and build confidence in the months leading up to birth.

If circumstances prevent you from attending within this recommended timeframe, the course can still be highly beneficial. Every pregnancy journey is unique, and many families attend outside this window and gain enormous value from the experience.

If you would like to discuss your individual circumstances, please feel free to contact Kate.

What if my partner can't attend?

Because Calmbirth® has a strong partner focus, we highly recommend attending together wherever possible.

If your partner is unable to attend the scheduled course, we recommend, where possible, booking an alternative course date or considering Private Calmbirth®, which offers greater flexibility and can be tailored to your availability.

If this is not possible, we encourage you to bring another support person such as your mother, sister, friend or another trusted person who will be supporting you through birth and the transition to parenthood.

Is Calmbirth® only for couples planning a natural birth?

No. Calmbirth® is not about preparing for one particular type of birth. It is designed to help you prepare emotionally, physically and practically for a wide range of birth experiences.

Whether your journey includes a physiological birth, induction, epidural, assisted birth or caesarean birth, Calmbirth® provides knowledge, practical skills and decision-making tools to help you approach birth feeling informed and confident.

We recognise that there are times when medical intervention may be recommended or required. This is not a failure, nor does it mean the end of a positive birth experience. Throughout the course, you’ll develop confidence communicating with your care providers and making informed decisions that align with your values and circumstances.

You’ll also learn practical skills such as relaxation, breathing, massage and acupressure techniques that can be beneficial regardless of how your birth unfolds.

Is Calmbirth® suitable for couples preparing for their first baby or a subsequent birth?

Yes. Calmbirth® is suitable for both first-time parents and those preparing to welcome another baby.

For first-time parents, Calmbirth® provides a comprehensive understanding of pregnancy, labour, birth and the transition to parenthood, along with practical skills and techniques to support the journey.

For parents preparing for a subsequent birth, Calmbirth® offers much more than a refresher. Many couples come to the course seeking a different experience after a previous birth that felt challenging, disappointing or traumatic. Others want to better understand their options, feel more confident in their decision-making, reconnect with each other as they prepare for another baby, and develop practical skills to work together as a team throughout labour and birth.

Calmbirth® provides an opportunity to reflect on previous experiences, develop new skills and strategies, and prepare for this birth with greater knowledge, confidence and clarity. Many parents tell me that the course helps them shift from feeling anxious or uncertain about birth to feeling informed, capable and excited to welcome their next baby.

Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, Calmbirth® can help you approach birth feeling informed, confident and prepared for the many possibilities ahead.

I am really nervous about my baby's birth. How can the Calmbirth® course help?

Many parents arrive at the course carrying some level of uncertainty, worry or fear about their baby’s birth. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching Calmbirth® is seeing fear gradually replaced with understanding, confidence and trust.

Throughout the course, you’ll develop a practical toolkit of knowledge and skills designed to support your nervous system, reduce fear and help you feel calmer and more prepared for birth. Together, we’ll explore relaxation, breathing, partner support, decision-making and ways to work with both the physical and emotional aspects of birth.

As an experienced midwife and Calmbirth® educator, Kate delivers the course in a warm, supportive and non-judgemental environment. The course is a gentle unfolding of the knowledge, practical skills and understanding needed to help you approach birth feeling informed, supported and prepared for all possibilities.

Can I claim Calmbirth® through my private health fund?

Private health insurance rebates may be available depending on your level of cover. Health funds that have previously provided rebates for Calmbirth® include NIB, Australian Unity, GMHBA and GU Health.

As health fund policies and levels of cover can vary, we strongly recommend checking your eligibility before booking if a rebate is an important consideration for you. Kate is happy to discuss this with you and may be able to assist with confirming the information required by your fund.

A receipt containing the relevant provider details will be issued following completion of the course, as health funds generally process claims after attendance.

Medicare does not provide rebates for childbirth education courses. If your health fund is not listed above, please contact Kate, as other funds may also provide rebates depending on your level of cover.

Is there any research that has studied the benefits of Calmbirth® during childbirth?

Yes. Research into Calmbirth® and similar psychoprophylaxis childbirth education programs has found positive outcomes for many families, including increased confidence, improved coping strategies and a more positive perception of birth. Studies have also shown trends towards higher rates of vaginal birth, lower epidural use and reduced intervention rates for some participants.

An independent qualitative evaluation of Calmbirth® participants found that the program helped parents feel more empowered, increased their health literacy and provided practical psychosocial coping strategies for pregnancy and birth. Participants also reported a more positive reframing of childbirth and greater confidence in navigating the birth experience.

If you would like to explore the research in more detail, you can visit the Calmbirth® research page.

What if I know I am having an induction or caesarean birth?

Calmbirth® is built around the philosophy of preparing for all possibilities. While many families attend hoping for a physiological birth, the course is designed to help you navigate a wide range of birth experiences with confidence, understanding and practical skills.

If you are planning an induction, you’ll gain knowledge about the process, common interventions and decision-making tools, along with practical techniques such as relaxation, breathing, massage and acupressure that can support you throughout your labour.

If you are planning a caesarean birth, many aspects of the course remain highly relevant, including understanding your options, communicating with your care providers, managing anxiety, supporting your nervous system and preparing for the early hours after birth and transition to parenthood.

If a caesarean birth has already been scheduled before booking, you may wish to contact Kate to discuss whether a dedicated caesarean birth preparation session would be more suitable for your individual circumstances.

Whatever path your birth takes, Calmbirth® aims to help you approach the experience feeling informed, supported and prepared for the decisions and possibilities ahead.

Does Calmbirth® take the place of other birth classes?

Does Calmbirth® take the place of other birth classes?

Many parents find that Calmbirth® provides the comprehensive birth preparation they are looking for and choose not to attend additional childbirth education classes. The course covers birth physiology, common maternity care practices and interventions, informed decision-making, birth partner support, relaxation, breathing, massage, acupressure and practical skills to help you navigate a wide range of birth experiences with confidence.

Some families also choose to attend hospital-based classes to become familiar with their chosen place of birth, local policies and hospital-specific procedures. Calmbirth® and hospital classes can complement one another, as they often have different areas of focus.

Calmbirth® is primarily focused on preparing you for pregnancy, birth and the immediate hours after birth. If you would like more detailed preparation for breastfeeding, newborn behaviour and the transition to parenthood, you may also wish to attend our Preparing for Baby® course. Some families also choose to seek individual support from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for specialised breastfeeding guidance.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. Calmbirth® is designed to provide a broad foundation of knowledge, practical skills and confidence-building tools to support you throughout your birth journey.
